Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati on Friday said that the results of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections was a ‘lesson’ for the party. BSP had managed to secure only one vote. “UP election results are opposed to BSP’s expectations. We should not be discouraged by it. Instead we should learn form it, introspect and carry forward our party movement, and come back to power,” she was quoted as saying by ANI.
As the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won Uttar Pradesh, Yogi was set to become the first Chief Minister to return to power in the state after completing a five-year term. And the BJP became the first party to retain power in the state since 1985. In his speech after wrapping up the mandate, Adityanath underscored the key theme behind his party’s repeat win. “The BJP’s double engine government, in the past five years, created an atmosphere of security and gave respect to faith,” he said. Calling elections a ‘festival of democracy’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked the voters for their mandate in favour of the BJP in Uttar Pradesh and three other states — one he described as “jeet ka chauka”. Stating that the results validate BJP’s pro-poor and proactive governance, Modi added that the festival of Holi has begun with BJP’s win in the assembly polls.
The BJP has won 255 seats, while its rival Samajwadi Party has won 111 seats, according to the Election Commission (EC) website. The Congress, showcasing a dismal performance, has won two seats. The BSP of Mayawati, a four-time chief minister, was all but obliterated with just one seat despite polling 12.88 per cent votes.
